"You Have Encountered a Serious Error" in Generals Zero Hour: Causes and Fixes

The "You have encountered a serious error" message in Generals Zero Hour means the game crashed with a memory access error and didn't say why. The usual culprits are old DirectX libraries, a wrong resolution in Options.ini, a clash with your antivirus or the wrong graphics card. Below are the fixes in the order worth trying, from quick to slow.

What the error itself tells you

The dialog lists viruses, overheating and weak hardware, but on a modern PC it's almost never any of those. A 2003 game is missing old Windows components, or its settings are getting in the way. Sometimes you get a hint in ReleaseCrashInfo.txt in Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data. If the file is there, open it: the end of it shows what the game tripped on. Sometimes there's no file at all, and then you just work down the list below.

Fix 1. GenPatcher

The fastest route. GenPatcher by Legionnaire installs the Visual C++ and DirectX libraries the game needs, fixed executables, patches 1.08 and 1.04, and edits the registry. According to the author, that solves about 99% of launch problems.

1. Turn off real-time protection in your antivirus: some scanners wrongly flag the patcher.
2. Download GenPatcher from legi.cc and run it.
3. Click "Apply Fixes" and wait for it to finish.
4. Start the game with the "Windowed" shortcut the patcher puts on your desktop.

Fix 2. DirectX 9.0c (June 2010)

Windows 10 and 11 ship a newer DirectX, but the old d3dx9 files aren't part of it. Microsoft's separate package installs them.

1. Download "DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)" from the Microsoft site.
2. Extract directx_Jun2010_redist.exe to any folder.
3. Run DXSETUP.exe from that folder as administrator.

Fix 3. Check Options.ini

The file is in Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data. If your Documents folder syncs through OneDrive, look for the same folder inside OneDrive.

• Open Options.ini in Notepad and find the line Resolution = 1920 1080. The numbers should match your monitor's resolution.
• If the resolution is also set in Steam launch options (-xres 1920 -yres 1080), the values must match. Easier to remove one of the two.
• If the file is corrupted, rename it to Options_old.ini. The game will create a new one on launch.

Fix 4. Compatibility and windowed mode

1. Open the game folder and find generals.exe.
2. Right-click → Properties → Compatibility.
3. Tick "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and pick Windows XP (Service Pack 3).
4. For the Steam version, add -win to the game's launch options so it starts in a window.

Fix 5. Run Generals first, then Zero Hour

Zero Hour came out as an expansion and uses some files from the original Generals. If you own both, start Generals first, get to the main menu and quit. Only then open Zero Hour. If the error doesn't go away, reinstall both games in that same order.

Fix 6. Graphics card and driver

On laptops with two GPUs, the game grabs the first device it finds and ignores the Windows graphics settings. Legionnaire suggests disabling the integrated graphics in the BIOS; the option is called Integrated Graphics, IGD or something similar. If the error showed up right after a driver update, roll the driver back in Device Manager.

Fix 7. Maps and MapCache.ini

A broken custom map can also crash the game while loading. One player on the EA forums fixed it by removing MapCache.ini from the Maps folder in Documents. Move the whole Maps folder to your desktop for a while. If the game starts, put the maps back one by one to find the bad one. How maps should be laid out is shown in the maps folder guide.

Serious error vs Technical Difficulties

"Technical Difficulties" is a different error from the same family. The usual advice for it is windowed mode, checking the InstallPath entry in the registry and replacing Options.ini.
