Generals Zero Hour on Android: How to Get It Running

You can't get Generals Zero Hour for Android as a standalone app from a store: EA never released a mobile version. You can still run the original game on your phone with ZeroFront, an Android port of the 2003 engine. Download the APK from the Telegram bot, copy your two game folders to the phone, and you get everything you had on PC: skirmish, campaigns, Generals Challenge and multiplayer.

What Generals Zero Hour is

Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour is the expansion for Generals, released by EA Los Angeles in September 2003. It needs the original Generals to run, which is why the phone needs both folders.

What the expansion added:

• three new generals per faction, each with their own units and powers;
• three new campaigns of five missions each, for the USA, China and the GLA;
• the Generals Challenge mode;
• new units, buildings, upgrades and maps.

The final version is 1.04. Online play runs on it, and mods are built for it.

The factions are the same as in the original. The USA fights with tech and air power, China wins with numbers, tanks and artillery, and the GLA has cheap units, traps and the ability to steal enemy vehicles. The new generals push each style in one direction: the tank general gets stronger armor, the air force general gets better aircraft, and each gives something up in return.

The nine Zero Hour generals

In Generals Challenge you pick one of the nine and take on the rest one by one. General Leang waits at the end as the final boss. It suits a phone well: one match, one clear goal, and you can knock out a couple of fights on the commute. The campaigns for all three factions are there too, if you want to replay them on your phone.

What you need to run it on a phone

The list is short:

1. An Android phone. We don't publish hardware requirements; the 24-hour trial is the easier way to check your device.
2. The ZeroFront app. The APK is in the bot @generals_mobile_bot.
3. The original Generals folder with Terrain.big, Textures.big, W3D.big and the other archives.
4. The Zero Hour folder.

We don't distribute game files. They come from your own copy: on Steam both games are sold as part of The Ultimate Collection, and they're also in the EA App. Which folders to copy from your PC is explained on the game files page.

ZeroFront is not an emulator. In 2025 EA opened the source code of both games, the community built an Android version from it, and the app runs on that version. So this is the same game you remember from your PC.

How to launch it on Android

1. Open the bot @generals_mobile_bot and download the APK.
2. Install it. If Play Protect warns you about an unknown app, tap "Install anyway".
3. Open ZeroFront. Start the free trial or enter a ZF-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX key.
4. Open game setup and allow "All files access". Without it the app can't see your folders.
5. In "Original Generals folder…", pick your Generals folder.
6. With "Set game folder", pick the Zero Hour folder.
7. Wait for the green status and tap "Start game".

How it plays on a touchscreen

Your first few matches go into learning the gestures, then muscle memory takes over. A few habits that save time:

• double-tap a unit to select every unit of that type on screen. Handy for grabbing all your tanks before a push;
• put your army into groups right away using the "=" and 0–9 panel on the left. Tap an empty group to save the selection, tap a used one to select it, double-tap to also jump the camera there;
• if you forget what an ability button does, hold it: the tooltip appears and the button doesn't fire;
• a long press of about 0.6 seconds, or a two-finger tap, cancels a build and clears the selection.

Edge scrolling is turned off. Move the camera with one finger; pan and zoom with two.

Pink ground instead of grass

If the map loads but the ground is pink or magenta instead of grass and sand, the original Generals folder isn't set. The expansion doesn't carry everything itself: it takes terrain textures from the base game.

The fix: Settings, then Game data, then "Original Generals folder…". Pick the folder that has Terrain.big and Textures.big and restart the match.

On PC the same bug shows up with portable copies that have no registry entry. A phone has no registry, so setting the path is enough.

Zero Hour multiplayer

There are two ways to play with friends.

Over Wi-Fi. We tested LAN between phones: the lobby shows up and players can join. You need the same Wi-Fi network and the same subnet (192.168.x.x addresses), with VPN and mobile data turned off. A hotspot that gives out addresses from different subnets won't work.

Over the internet. The hub has a sign-in for a Generals Online network profile (playgenerals.online), a community service with lobbies and matches. Your callsign, up to 11 characters, is set in the hub.

Mods

The popular mods, Contra included, are built for version 1.04. Tested and working on the phone: Contra 009 Final with Patch 3 (setup in Contra 009 on Android) and Contra 007. Other mods we check on request: send the name to the bot.
