GenPatcher: What It Is and How to Get Generals and Zero Hour Running with It

GenPatcher is a free tool that fixes Command & Conquer Generals and Zero Hour so they launch on Windows 10 and 11. It's been developed since 2019 by Legionnaire, the author of legi.cc. You run one file, click "Apply Fixes", and the patcher installs the missing libraries, patches and fixed exe files on its own. According to the author, that solves about 99% of launch problems. The current version on legi.cc is 2.14.

Supported game versions

What GenPatcher fixes

From the official page:

• installs Visual C++ Redistributable 2005, 2008 and 2010;
• installs the Windows Media Feature Pack and the DirectX runtime;
• updates the games to Generals 1.08 and Zero Hour 1.04;
• installs fixed executables for both games;
• repairs desktop and Start menu shortcuts and adds a "Windowed" shortcut for windowed mode;
• writes the registry entries the game needs;
• deals with the dbghelp.dll and BrowserEngine.dll files;
• installs a proxy launcher for GameRanger;
• checks your graphics driver and looks for known programs that interfere with the game.

Additional content

The additional content tab lets you install the things the community usually downloads by hand:

• GenTool: widescreen, FPS cap, replay camera, anti-cheat (more in the GenTool guide);
• Control Bar HD and Control Bar Pro, the bottom UI bars for high resolutions;
• hotkey layouts, including Legionnaire's Hotkeys v1.4, with hints on the icons;
• the GenLauncher mod launcher;
• the World Builder map editor;
• the Community Map Pack with maps for skirmish, multiplayer and co-op.

For PCs without internet, the author also posts an offline bundle on ModDB.

How to use GenPatcher

Before you start

1. If you own both games, start Generals first, then Zero Hour. Get to the main menu and quit. If the game won't open, don't worry, just move on.
2. Turn off real-time protection in your antivirus. The author warns that some scanners see a false threat because the program modifies game files.

Running it

1. Download GenPatcher.exe from legi.cc (about 11 MB) or from the project's ModDB page.
2. Extract it to your desktop and run it.
3. If a SmartScreen window appears, click "More info" → "Run anyway".
4. Click "Apply Fixes" and wait until it's done. You need an internet connection, since fixes are downloaded as it goes.
5. Optionally, open the additional content tab, tick GenTool and a control bar, and click "Apply".
6. Turn your antivirus back on.
7. Start the game with the "Windowed" shortcut on your desktop.

Where to see the game path

The Installation Info tab shows where Generals and Zero Hour are installed. Handy when you need to drop a mod or patch into the game folder.

If something's still wrong after GenPatcher

The game crashes on startup. On the "Bugs, Solutions and FAQ" page, Legionnaire suggests checking your graphics card. The game takes the first device it finds, so on laptops disabling the integrated graphics in the BIOS sometimes helps. The "You have encountered a serious error" message has its own guide.

The camera doesn't scroll at the screen edge. Press Win, type edgescroller and run that utility. GenPatcher installs it.

GameRanger doesn't see the game. Run "Apply Fixes" again. In GameRanger, open Edit → Options, find the game, click Browse and point it to generals.exe in the install folder.

Online games won't let you in with icon hints on. On the additional content tab, untick the hotkey hints on icons and click "Apply".

GenPatcher and the TheSuperHackers patch

legi.cc also hosts builds of the TheSuperHackers patch. It's an open-source project that fixes Zero Hour 1.04 itself. You extract the files into the game folder and run generalszh.exe. The Installation Info tab is a convenient place to get the folder path. The builds are updated often, so check the site for the latest one.

A quick word about phones
