If you want to know how to play Generals Zero Hour online in 2026, there are four ways. On PC you have Generals Online (a community service for Zero Hour), C&C:Online (the replacement for the closed GameSpy) and LAN over Radmin VPN. On an Android phone with ZeroFront you get LAN on one Wi-Fi network and online play through a Generals Online profile right inside the app. CnCNet doesn't cover Generals right now; we explain why below.
The official servers ran on GameSpy. When GameSpy shut down in 2014, the built-in online mode stopped working, and multiplayer has been kept alive by the community since.
Quick answer: which option to pick
| Option | Platform | Games | What you need | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Generals Online | PC (Windows), phone via ZeroFront | Zero Hour | installer on PC, or profile sign-in in ZeroFront | easy |
| C&C:Online | PC (Windows) | Generals and Zero Hour | client launcher and an account | medium |
| Radmin VPN + LAN | PC (Windows) | Generals and Zero Hour | Radmin VPN for every player, same game version | medium |
| LAN on one Wi-Fi | phones with ZeroFront | Zero Hour | same Wi-Fi network, same subnet | easy |
| CnCNet | PC | Generals and Zero Hour not supported | doesn't work | n/a |
If you're on PC and just want a match, go with Generals Online. If you want the original Generals without the expansion, C&C:Online is what's left. To play with a friend without any accounts, use Radmin VPN. On a phone, it's all built into ZeroFront.
Generals Online: what it is and how to start
Generals Online (playgenerals.online) is a network service built by the community. Its authors describe it as a full rewrite of the networking code based on the source EA released, rather than another GameSpy emulator. It works with Zero Hour only. The project is free, runs on donations and isn't affiliated with EA.
What the service offers, according to its site:
- lobbies, chat and Quickmatch;
- 60 Hz netcode, so commands register faster than in the original;
- relay servers in several countries, so you don't need to forward ports or touch your router;
- custom map transfer right in the lobby;
- automatic client updates.
Getting started on PC:
- Download the installer from playgenerals.online.
- Point it at your existing Zero Hour install. Steam and EA App versions both work, no reinstall needed.
- Sign in with Steam, Discord or a GameReplays account. There's no separate password registration on the site.
- Launch the game through Generals Online and join a lobby.
ZeroFront supports Generals Online, so on a phone you don't need a separate installer. More on that below.
C&C:Online (cnc-online.net)
C&C:Online appeared after GameSpy shut down. It's a free community server from Revora that brings multiplayer back to five games in the series: Generals, Zero Hour, Tiberium Wars, Kane's Wrath and Red Alert 3. You can host and find games, chat and add friends. Stats and rankings are tracked by the Shatabrick site.
The process: download the client from cnc-online.net, create an account (it takes about a minute) and launch the game through the client. Old accounts tied to Revora no longer work, so even veterans have to register again.
The big plus of C&C:Online is that it also has the original Generals. If that's the game you want to play online, it's close to your only choice.
CnCNet and Generals
CnCNet gets recommended a lot on forums. But as of September 25, 2026, the list of supported games on cncnet.org only has the older titles: Command & Conquer, Red Alert, Tiberian Sun, Red Alert 2, Yuri's Revenge and Dune 2000. Generals and Zero Hour are listed among the other games in the series, without multiplayer support.
If you find a guide on playing Generals through CnCNet, it's most likely out of date. For Zero Hour, use Generals Online or C&C:Online.
Playing Generals online with friends over Radmin VPN
Radmin VPN is a free program from Famatech for Windows 7–11. It creates a virtual LAN over the internet, so the game sees your friend as if you were in the same room. For Generals it's a long-proven method: no accounts, no third-party servers.
Radmin VPN setup, step by step
- Both players install Radmin VPN from radmin-vpn.com.
- One of you creates a network (Network, then Create Network) and sets a name and password.
- The other picks Join Network and enters the same details. You can also join a public gaming network: search for Generals in Radmin VPN.
- Start the game and open Options. In the LAN IP field, pick the address that starts with 26. That's the Radmin VPN address, not your home router's. Click Accept.
- Open Multiplayer, then Network. The host creates a room in the LAN lobby and the other player sees it in the list.
If there's no 26.x.x.x address in the drop-down, make sure Radmin VPN was connected to the network before you started the game. You can also set the address by hand: it's the IPAddress line in Options.ini, which sits in your Documents folder under Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data.
Everyone needs the same game version and patch, usually 1.04. It also helps to sync your custom maps in advance. The same rule goes for mods: Contra over Radmin only works if both of you have the exact same mod version.
Do you need Radmin on a phone?
No. Famatech doesn't make a Radmin VPN client for Android: the official site lists Windows only. You'll find apps with a similar name on Google Play, but Famatech's site doesn't mention them, and Generals doesn't need them.
On a phone with ZeroFront, multiplayer is simpler. If you're in the same place, join one Wi-Fi network and play over LAN. If your friend is in another city, go online through the Generals Online profile right in the hub. Both options are covered below. Any VPN running on the phone actually gets in the way of LAN: the lobby stops showing up.
If multiplayer on PC won't work
Most PC multiplayer problems come down to a handful of causes. Go through them in order before you reinstall anything.
- Every player needs the same Zero Hour version and patch. If one has 1.04 and the other has an older build or a different set of files, the game either won't let you into the room or the match ends in a mismatch.
- You can play a mod online only if everyone has it, in the same version. Contra on one side and vanilla Zero Hour on the other won't connect.
- On first launch Windows asks whether to allow the game network access. If you hit Cancel, the lobby stays empty. You can restore the permission in the firewall settings.
- With Radmin VPN, the game's network settings must use the virtual network address, 26.x.x.x. With your router's address, your friend won't see you.
- Antivirus software and other VPNs sometimes block game traffic. Turn them off for the match or add the game to the exceptions.
Generals Online takes care of some of this on its own: it updates automatically, and you don't need to configure ports or your router.
Generals multiplayer on a phone with ZeroFront
ZeroFront runs the original Zero Hour on Android. It's the 2003 engine ported to phones, not an emulator. Multiplayer works in two ways.
LAN between phones
LAN play between phones is tested: the lobby shows up and players can join. The requirements are simple but strict:
- all phones are on the same Wi-Fi network;
- their addresses are in the same subnet, usually 192.168.x.x;
- VPN is off;
- mobile data is off, so the phone doesn't route traffic through the carrier.
A phone hotspot often won't work: on some hotspots devices get addresses from different subnets and can't see each other. A regular home router is the safest bet.
Your in-game name is set in the app's hub. It's your callsign, up to 11 characters. If the lobby still doesn't show up, check the Local network card in the app and our rundown of common errors on the phone.
Online through Generals Online
The ZeroFront hub has a sign-in for a Generals Online network profile. After signing in you get internet lobbies and matches like on PC, without a separate installer or port setup. That's how you play with a friend in another city when you're not on the same Wi-Fi.
You bring the game files for the phone yourself: the original Generals folder and the Zero Hour folder. Where to get them legally and how to move them over is in our guide to the Generals and Zero Hour files. Installing the app is covered in the step-by-step guide, and the gestures for combat are on the touchscreen controls page.
FAQ
Does Generals Zero Hour online still work in 2026?
Yes, but not through the built-in GameSpy, which closed in 2014. People play through Generals Online, C&C:Online, or LAN over Radmin VPN.
Does CnCNet support Generals and Zero Hour?
Not according to the list on cncnet.org as of September 2026. CnCNet handles the older games in the series; for Zero Hour use Generals Online or C&C:Online.
Can I play the original Generals online, without Zero Hour?
Generals Online supports Zero Hour only. The original Generals is on C&C:Online, and you can also run it over LAN with Radmin VPN.
Why can't the phones see each other on LAN?

Can I use Radmin VPN on my phone?
No, Radmin VPN has no Android version, only Windows. On a phone with ZeroFront you play over one Wi-Fi network or online through Generals Online in the hub.
Do I need a separate account to play online on the phone?
You need to sign in to a Generals Online profile, which is built into the ZeroFront hub. LAN play doesn't need a profile.
You can try multiplayer on your phone within a day: download the APK in @generals_mobile_bot, and the first 24 hours are free. Subscription terms are on a separate page.
