GenLauncher is a free launcher for Generals and Zero Hour that downloads, installs and switches mods for you. It's made by p0ls3r (PaL_Ser on ModDB). Rise of the Reds, Contra, ShockWave and Project Raptor can all live in one game folder while your clean Zero Hour stays untouched. You can get GenLauncher from ModDB or the author's Discord. The latest build there is 1.0.0.9 from September 2024, and the launcher updates itself from there.
What GenLauncher does
- Downloads, installs and updates mods, plus their patches and add-ons.
- Keeps several mods in one game folder and starts the one you pick.
- Imports your own mods from rar, zip, 7z or .big files. Those stay local and don't get updates.
- Installs and updates GenTool, and xezon's fixed Zero Hour exe with the LAN camera height.
- Starts World Builder, windowed mode and quickstart, and takes custom command-line arguments.
- Has a graphics menu, a camera height setting and a Vulkan mode.
- Checks mod files against MD5 checksums before the game starts.
It works with both Generals and Zero Hour, though the Zero Hour catalog is much bigger.
Which mods are in the catalog
The catalog doesn't come from ModDB. It's a set of manifest files on the author's GitHub, and each mod has its own manifest maintained by that mod's team. According to p0ls3r, the mods are hosted on the launcher with their authors' consent.
| Game | Mods in the catalog (October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Zero Hour | Rise of the Reds (with HanPatch), Contra, ShockWave, Project Raptor, The End of Days, Zero Hour Reborn, Operation Firestorm, Cold War Crisis, Revolution Project, Zero Hour Enhanced, ProGen 2.6 and more |
| Generals | Project Tomahawk Storm, Generals Enhanced, ProGen 1.9 |
The same menu installs the Generals Online client and GenTool. Maps aren't in the catalog, so you still add them by hand, as described in the map install guide. For what each mod is and how they differ, see Zero Hour mods.
What you need
- Windows. The author hasn't tested Linux or Wine and doesn't support them: under Proton the window opens, but mod downloads hang on "Preparing, please wait…".
- .NET Framework 4.6 or newer. If it's missing, the launcher links you to the 4.8 installer.
- Administrator rights. Every build description on ModDB says to run it as administrator.
- An NTFS drive. Mods are attached with symbolic links, which FAT32 and exFAT can't hold.
- An installed game. The Steam version has been supported since 1.0.0.7 (March 2024), including its ZH_Generals subfolder. For other editions the author says nothing specific: the launcher just looks for generals.exe, BINKW32.DLL and WindowZH.big (Window.big for Generals) in the folder.
How to install GenLauncher and launch a mod
Step 1. Download
Get the archive from moddb.com/mods/genlauncher or from the Discord linked in the README on GitHub. Skip third-party "GenLauncher bundle" sites: the launcher is a few megabytes and the author hosts it.
Step 2. Put it in the game folder
Extract GenLauncher.exe into the root of your Zero Hour folder (or Generals, if you're adding mods for that game). If the exe is anywhere else, the launcher says "Please move launcher to the Generals ZH or Generals game folder".
Step 3. Run as administrator
Right-click GenLauncher.exe → "Run as administrator". Without it, the links to mod files may fail.
Step 4. Add and install a mod
Click "ADD MOD!", tick one or more mods and click "INSTALL!". Patches and add-ons for the selected mod are on the neighboring tabs.
Step 5. Play
Select the mod in the list and click "LAUNCH GAME". Plain Zero Hour is still there: start it the usual way, from your shortcut or Steam.
How GenLauncher stores mods
Mod files live in a separate GLM folder. When you launch, the launcher attaches the mod to the Zero Hour folder with symbolic links, and original files that would clash with the mod get a .GLR suffix for the duration of the match. After you quit, everything goes back. If the game or launcher crashed, it restores the files on its next start.
Two things follow from that. Removing a mod from the list doesn't always free up space: ModDB users report the files stay in the GLM folder. And don't copy the game folder while a mod is attached, or the copy will get links and renamed .GLR files instead of real ones.
Troubleshooting
| What you see | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Please move launcher to the Generals ZH or Generals game folder" | the exe isn't in the game folder | move GenLauncher.exe to the Zero Hour root, next to generals.exe |
| link creation error on launch | the drive isn't NTFS, no admin rights, or antivirus blocks the link | run as administrator, keep the game on an NTFS drive, add the game folder to antivirus exclusions |
| "Cannot connect to github" | the launcher couldn't reach its catalog on GitHub | check your connection and access to github.com, try again later |
| the mod crashes after the splash screen | usually the base game itself doesn't start on this system | launch clean Zero Hour without the mod; if that fails too, start with GenPatcher and the serious error guide |
| downloads hang on "Preparing, please wait…" | running on Linux or Proton | not officially supported, install the mod by hand |
GenLauncher vs GenTool vs GenPatcher
People mix these three up. GenPatcher fixes the game itself on Windows 10 and 11: libraries, patches and fixed exe files. GenTool handles widescreen, FPS limits and the replay camera, covered in the GenTool guide. GenLauncher manages mods and can install and update GenTool on its own.
The usual order: GenPatcher first so clean Zero Hour runs, then GenLauncher for mods.
Since September 2026 there's also an independent fork on GitHub, GenLauncherGO-Rewritten, under GPL-3.0. A different author makes it, and it isn't affiliated with p0ls3r.
Mods on your phone
GenLauncher doesn't run on Android, it's Windows only. On a phone, Zero Hour and mods are opened by ZeroFront, which needs a plain mod folder without links or renamed files.
The easiest way is a separate copy of Zero Hour just for the phone, with the mod installed using the mod team's own installer, as described on the Contra 009 on Android page. If you installed the mod through GenLauncher, close the launcher and the game before copying so it puts the files back. Contra 009 Final, Contra 007 and Project Raptor are tested on phones (the bot has a separate Raptor build packed into .big files). Other mods we add on request.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I download GenLauncher?
From ModDB at moddb.com/mods/genlauncher, or from the author's Discord linked in the GitHub README. The launcher is free.
Does GenLauncher work with the Steam version of Zero Hour?
Yes, since version 1.0.0.7 from March 2024. Put the exe in your Steam Zero Hour folder, and the launcher handles its ZH_Generals subfolder on its own.
Does GenLauncher mess up the clean game?
Not if you close it normally. Mods are linked only for the match, and renamed files come back after you quit or on the launcher's next start.
What's the latest GenLauncher version?
ModDB has 1.0.0.9 from September 20, 2024. The built-in updater offers 1.0.1.0, which the author published in early 2025.
Is there GenLauncher for Android?
No, it's Windows only. On a phone, Zero Hour and the tested mods run through the ZeroFront app, and you move the mod folder over from your PC.
Try Zero Hour and mods on your own phone in @generals_mobile_bot: the first 24 hours are free.
